Thinning versus Heading

There are two types of pruning cuts—thinning and heading—which produce different effects. Thinning cuts remove the entire shoot or branch back to where it meets the branch or trunk. Heading cuts shorten a branch or shoot by pruning just a portion off the end. Heading cuts stimulate the remaining lateral buds on the branch to increase vigor and encourage the sprouting of new shoots that results in an explosion of dense growth that limits light and air flow within the tree. Typically, with fruit trees, you want to focus on thinning cuts to avoid crowding.
